The grand finale in Zurich saw Athletissima’s ambassador Audrey Werro capture the highly coveted 800 m trophy after a fierce battle, record included. And Simon Ehammer did the same in the long jump. Unforgettable!

At the Letzigrund, Audrey Werro not only lowered her Swiss record by 0’’38 to 1’55’’91, she also delivered a tactically brilliant race, perhaps the very first of her young career. The Fribourg native had given plenty of warning in recent weeks with a spectacular rise in form.

Never before had Swiss athletics experienced such a successful season on the big stage. Athletissima and Weltklasse proved to be fantastic springboards, with three Swiss podiums in Lausanne (Werro, Ditaji Kambundji, Ehammer) and then two glorious victories in Zurich (Werro and Ehammer). Add to that Ditaji Kambundji’s 2nd place in the 100 m hurdles in 12’’40 at the Weltklasse, equalling the Swiss record, Angelica Moser’s 4th place in the pole vault with 4m65, Jason Joseph’s 4th in the 110 m hurdles in 13’’22 just one hundredth from the podium, and Annik Kälin’s 5th place in the long jump with 6m55. What more could you ask for?

The season went far beyond expectations, especially as the Swiss made their mark throughout the entire circuit. Remember Jason Joseph’s victory in Rome earlier this summer. Not so long ago, Swiss podiums in the Diamond League were a rarity, now they have almost become a tradition. Which means Switzerland will head to the World Championships in Tokyo from September 13 to 21 with several medal contenders.

Behind the leaders — to whom we can also add Dominic Lobalu and future mother Mujinga Kambundji — a new generation is emerging. Simon Wieland in the javelin, who surpassed 80 m for the first time with his 81m24 on Thursday in Zurich for 7th place, Veronica Vancardo, Lore Hoffmann and Joceline Wind in the 800 m, the 4×100 m relay team led by Salomé Kora and Léonie Pointet, Valentin Imsand in the pole vault, Timothé Mumenthaler in the sprints… all of them can now compete at the very top level.

Good news for Athletissima, the meeting more than withstood the downpour that struck Lausanne on August 20. In the 2025 World Athletics rankings, it was listed as the 4th best meeting of the season based on the quality of the line-up, the famous “participation score”.
