Audrey Werro sets no limits

Following her three impressive 800m victories in Rabat, Stockholm and Ostrava, highlighted by the third fastest time in history in the Swedish capital 1:53.98, Audrey Werro is refusing to set any boundaries on what she can achieve. “The world record isn’t a target, more of a dream,” she said during a widely attended Athletissima press conference in Lausanne on Friday, “It actually scares me a little to think about it, because the speeds are just stratospheric”

The athlete from Fribourg, ambassador of the Lausanne meeting, admitted she was “a bit shocked” when she saw her time in Stockholm, before backing it up just nine days later in Ostrava, only a few tenths slower, “I was expecting something closer to 1:55, My training plan is focused on peaking at the European Championships in Birmingham in mid August”

It all points to an exciting summer, The indoor world silver medallist and 2025 Diamond League Final winner says she is not setting herself any limits, “You can always go faster, You just have to train and believe that anything is possible”

Unlike Keely Hodgkinson, who is targeting Jarmila Kratochvílová’s world record 1:53.28 in London on July 18, Werro is not planning any specific record attempt, Her upcoming goals include the Swiss 400m record 50.52 held by Lea Sprunger, which she aims to break on July 1 in Fribourg, as well as the 800m at the Paris Diamond League meeting three days earlier, She is not expected to face Hodgkinson again before August in Birmingham.

An intriguing anecdote emerged from Ostrava, where Kratochvílová herself reportedly told Werro she would be “happy” to see her long standing record finally broken, That record, the oldest in athletics, dates back to 1983.

And what about Athletissima, “This meeting represents the launchpad of my international career, I have wonderful memories here, especially the 2025 edition, which I will never forget with my podium finish and the challenging weather conditions, The Swiss crowd creates a special atmosphere, This closeness pushes us to keep raising our limits”

Werro will notably line up this year at the Pontaise against newcomer Femke Broeders-Bol over the 800m, whom she clearly defeated in Ostrava, The question remains, what pace will the wavelight be set to, The answer will come on 21 August
