During last year’s Athletissima edition, Bohdan Bondarenko had demanded to place the bar at 2.46m, 1 centimetre more than the world record (2.45m) held by the Cuban Javier Sotomayor and performed in Salamanque 27th July 1993. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian athlete just couldn’t make it.
Since then, Bohdan Bondarenko has attempted several times to jump over 2.46m. “Five or Six times”, he confirmed at his arrival at the hotel. Each time success was near, but just not there yet. “I like coming to Lausanne, jumping at Athletissima. It’s my 3rd time here at a worldwide meeting of such class. Every time is great and the public is friendly, welcoming. I also like the town, the lake, this place pleases me a lot.”
Thursday, Bohdan Bondarenko will be facing men who, alike him, have jumped 2.40m or more (Barshim, Ukhov, Drouin, Dmitrik). Is a world record possible in Lausanne? “Yes, if all the weather conditions are good.” Do feel capable of beating it? He smiles, mischieviously: “I don’t know…”
