New composition for the Swiss Team with Salomé KORA, Sarah ATCHO, Ajla DEL PONTE and Mujinga KAMBUNDJI. With their second runner, Netherland took the lead, leaving the second place to the Democratic People’s Republic of China, and third place to Switzerland. KAMBUNDJI makes a strong comeback, but it is not enough. The final ranking remains unchanged, Netherland wins with 42”33, followed by China in 42”50 and Switzerland in 42”60 (only 31 hundredth of a second behind the Swiss record set last year).
21h42 | 200m Men | LYLES makes history with a fabulous 19”50
Running in lane 7, the American Noah LYLES (USA) wants to make history. His moves are smooth, he takes the turn with ease, and treats the spectators with sublime finish. His race is just magnificent, and the time is the fourth fastest in history: 19”50. Behind, his opponents are not to be ashamed. Alex QUIÑÓNEZ (ECU) runs a strong 19”87, in front of the Canadian Andre DE GRASSE (CAN) in 19”92 and Aaron BROWN (CAN) in 19”95. Ramil GULIYEV (TUR) just misses the 20”00 barrier with 20”01. Sixth place went to Alex WILSON (SUI) with 20”29.
21h32 | 1500m Men | Huge race for CHERUIYOT and the INGEBRIGTSEN brothers
An impressive and crazy race, especially for Timothy CHERUIYOT (KEN). Cruising at World Record pace, CHERUIYOT comes through the first 800m in 1’49 and the 1000m in 2’16. Right behind, the INGEBRIGTSEN brothers are more cautious, but close their 1500m like bullets. Timothy CHERUIYOT wins it all with a meet record and world lead for his impressive time of 3’28”77. Jakob INGEBRIGTSEN (NOR) comes in second only 15 hundredth of a second behind his Norwegian record. The Indoor World Champion and U20 world record holder Ayanleh SOULEIMAN (DJI) finishes third, whilst the double European Champion Filip INGEBRIGTSEN (NOR) just missed the podium in 3’30”82.
21h23 | 400m Hurdles Women | Nice race from Shamier LITTLE
Shamier LITTLE (USA) runs a wonderful race in the 400m Hurdles, dominating the field with 53”73, third best performance of the year. The second place is a tie between the two times world Champion Zuzana HEJNOVÁ (CZE) and World Champion Ashley SPENCER (USA), both finishing in 54”11. Janieve RUSSELL (JAM) comes in third whilst the European Champion Léa SPRUNGER (SUI) comes in fifth once again, with a new season best set at 55”24.
21h15 | 100m Men | GATLIN JUST LIKE AT HOME
The veteran Olympic Champion and three times World Champion Justin GATLIN (USA) showed that he was still the boss. Following a poor start, he puts in more effort than his opponents and wins with ease. Michael RODGERS (USA) has to settle for second place with 10”01 while Aaron BROWN (CAN) comes in third with 10”07.
20h55 | 5000m Men | Ethiopian podium and new Record for Julien WANDERS
After eight rounds, Julien WANDERS (SUI) came in the lead as he felt a considerable slow down in the pace of the field. The race is then locked until 700m before the finish, as Dawit FIKADU (BRN) sprints, takes the lead and stops right after the finish line believing that he just won, while there was still 400m left. The crowd tells him to continue, but it was way too hard to come back from this blunder. The podium is shared by the three Ethiopians: Yomif KEJELCHA (13’00”56), Selemon BAREGA (13’01”99) and Telahun Haile BEKELE (13’03”09). Following a very smart race, the young Swiss Julien WANDERS secures a great time: 13’13”84 - the third best Swiss performance ever after Markus RYFFEL (13’07”54 in 1984) and Christian BELZ (13’12”16 in 2003).
20h46 | 100m Women | Demonstration of power for Shelly-Ann FRASER-PRYCE
The superstar Shelly-Ann FRASER-PRYCE (JAM) seemed to be flying above the track, defeating her opponents with an impressive time: 10”74. The double Olympic Champion and seven times World Champion was only one hundredth of a second behind her result from the Jamaican Championships. Four times European Champion Dina ASHER-SMITH (GBR) comes in second with 10”91, running a season best just like Marie-Josée TA LOU (CIV) and her 10”93.
Between the two Swiss runners, it was Mujinga KAMBUNDJI (11”27) who outedged Salomé KORA (11”29).
20h45 | Long Jump Men | The incredible Juan Miguel ECHEVARRÍA jumps 8.32m
European Champion Miltiadis TENTOGLOU (GRE) took the lead with 8.19m, a season best. However, a couple of minutes later, the incredible Cuban Juan Miguel ECHEVARRÍA sets the record straight with an impressive 8.32m. The leading duo is followed by World Champion Luvo MANYONGA (RSA) and Tajay GAYLE (JAM), both at 8.13m.
20h37 | 800m Men | VÁZQUEZ explodes and KINYAMAL triumphs.
What a race! The Puertorican athlete Wesley VÁZQUEZ pushes the pacemaker to run faster, despite running through the first 400m extremely fast (50”67). He leads the peloton until 150m before the finish line and is ready to secure an impressive time, but all of a sudden his stride crumbles dramatically. He finishes in seventh position, outperformed by the leading kenyan trio: Wyclife KINYAMAL (1’43”73), Ferguson Cheruiyot ROTICH (1’43”93) and Emmanuel Kipkurui KORIR (1’44”01).
20h28 | 110m Hurdles Men | Third best performance of the year for Orlando ORTEGA
While his opponents keep touching the hurdles, the Spaniard Orlando ORTEGA secures a clear advantage with a smooth run. With 13”05, he achieves his third best performance of the year. The American Daniel ROBERTS crosses the finish line in second with an excellent time: 13”11. The third place on the podium went to Ronald LEVY (JAM), who ends the 110m Hurdles with 13”28. The Swiss U20 European Champion Jason JOSEPH finishes in 13”80, far behind his 13”39 Swiss Record.
20h25 | High Jump Women | Mariya LASITSKENE wins with 2.02m
Three athletes already jumped 1.97m. The Bulgarian Mirela DEMIREVA missed the 2.00m bar, but it was no challenge to Karyna TARANDA (BLR) and two times World Champion Mariya LASITSKENE (ANA), both clearing it on their first jump. LASITSKENE was then the only one succeeding at 2.02m, but only on her third attempt. She went on to have three further attempts at 2.07m, but missed all of them.
20h18 | 800m Women | Nelly JEPKOSGEI powers through the finish line
Leading the field until 600m, Nelly JEPKOSGEI (KEN) sees Halimah NAKAAYI (UGA) catching up to her when entering the home stretch. They stand shoulder to shoulder and the uncertainty of the race raises the excitement to unprecedented heights. JEPKOSGEI keeps her leading position and secures the win with 1’59”54, leaving second place to her opponent NAKAAYI.
Gabriela GAJANOVÁ (SVK) comes in third in 2’01”25, whilst on the Swiss side Selina BÜCHEL (SUI) ends fourth followed by the young Delia SCLABAS (SUI). Lore HOFFMANN (SUI) finishes in 2’04”12.
20h10 | 200m Women | THOMAS ahead of WILLIAMS, ATCHO seventh
The Women’s 200m provided a tight race to the finish between Gabrielle THOMAS (USA) and Jodie WILLIAMS (GBR). Both of them stretch forth on the finish line, but if was the American athlete who came in first with 22”69, whilst WILLIAMS’ time was 22”75. The Swiss talent Sarah ATCHO secures a seventh place with 23”41 - far behind her 2018 result of 22”80.
20h05 | Pole Vault Men | 6.01m for Piotr LISEK
Only three vaulters are attempting the bar at 6.01m - equalling the best performance of the year and smashing the Meet Record (5.93m). The Polish athlete Piotr LISEK becomes the 21st man on earth to master 6m or more. The American Sam KENDRICKS (USA) clears 5.95m and improves his best performance by 2cm. The third place is shared by Armand DUPLANTIS (SWE) and Renaud LAVILLENIE (FRA), both with 5.81m.
20h03 | 400m Women | Meeting Record for NASER
Once again Salwa Eid NASER (BRN) wins in Lausanne, with a time never seen before on this track. With 49”17, she runs the second best performance in the world this year. She succeeds by the narrowest of margins, as Aminatou SEYNI (NIG) crosses the line merely two hundredths of a second later, with 49”19 - a National Record. NASER wins today thanks to a magnificent acceleration 15m before the finish line.
19h05 | Shot Put Women | Christina SCHWANITZ brings home another German victory
Following the victory of HUSSONG in the Javelin Throw, Christina SCHWANITZ wins another gold for Germany, this time in the Shot Put. The World Champion and double European Champion throws at 19.04m on her fourth attempt. She is followed by Brittany CREW (CAN), who delivers 18.46m, whilst Fanny ROOS (SWE) comes in third with 18.41m on her first attempt.
19h00 | Triple Jump Women | Caterine IBARGUEN rules over an amazing field
The Women’s Triple Jump was a high profile event with a loaded field. Yulimar ROJAS (VEN), World Champion and Olympic Silver Medallist, started with a strong 14.82m jump, but Caterine IBARGUEN still comes out on top with a 5th jump at 14.89m. Ranking only third last year, she started with a jump at 14.57m, followed by three fouls before securing victory with a season best. Landing at 14.66m, the Cuban Liadagmis POVEA comes in third whilst the two Jamaican athletes Shanieka RICKETTS and Kimberly WILLIAMS jump respectively to 14.65m and 14.52m.
18h30 | Javelin Throw Women | Christin HUSSONG wins with a season best
The reigning European Champion Christin HUSSONG (GER) sets a new season best with her second throw at 66.59m, thereby sealing her victory. She is followed by the Australian Kelsey-Lee BARBER with 65.08m, and Barbora ŠPOTÁKOVÁ (CZE) comes in third. The double Olympic Champion, Bronze Medallist and World Record holder only manages one successful throw at 63.79m, just enough to step on the podium.
The Herculis Meeting, next stage of the 2019 IAAF Diamond League, will take place on Friday 12 July at the Stade Louis II in Monaco.
